Kamakhya devi Temple
This temple is situated on the top of the neelachala hills. The tradition of Assam is known for tantric practice. The presiding deity kamakhya devi. The other deities of this temple are Ganesha, Bhuvaneswari, Bhairavi, Dhumavati , Lakshmi and Saraswati and chinnamasta . The temple was rebuilt in 16th century by the king NaraNarayana.
STORY OF THE PLACE: After the daksha yagna, Lord Shiva was unable to bear the separation of Shakthi he started rudra tandava carrying the body of shakthi. The Lord Vishnu used his chakra to tear the body in order to bring down the rudra tandava . The severed pieces of the body fell across the region. The place at which these body pieces fell became shakthi peethams. Likewise, the shakthi's yoni is believed to have fallen where kamakhya temple stands today (Yoni represents the reproductive organ). That's why the presiding deity of this temple do not have an idol.It is represented by a yoni carved out from a bedrock and it is covered by a water spring . The yoni is smeared with vermilion (kumkum) .o
THE VISITORS: This place attracts a lot of sadhus and tantrics. Ambubashi festival is held every year in the month of June. The temple is closed for three days( during this closure it is believed that the goddess kamakhya menstruates) and on fourth day the temple will be opened for devotees. Another important festival is navarathri .
